Electric vehicle adoption in Austria and Germany
Overview
Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is increasing across Austria and Germany, though regional disparities persist. In Austria, the Kärnten region saw electric cars reach a 30 percent share of new registrations in September, a significant rise from 2 percent in 2019. Nationally, Austrian EV registrations reached a milestone where electric cars accounted for one-third of all new registrations. Regional leaders in Austria include Upper Austria at 42 percent, while Styria recorded the lowest share at 27 percent.
In Germany, registration trends also vary by state. Rheinland-Pfalz leads with a 33.1 percent share, while Hamburg reports the lowest share at 16.9 percent. Despite these differences, all German states showed an increase in EV shares compared to the previous year.
To support market growth, manufacturers are focusing on affordability. Stellantis is planning to launch more affordable electric models, including a version of the Citroën 2CV expected to cost less than 15,000 Euro. Additionally, Dacia has unveiled the new Spring, which is anticipated to enter the Austrian market in early 2027.
