Electric vehicles become more affordable to operate in Europe

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly cost-effective to operate in Europe. According to an analysis by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) released in September 2026, fully electric vehicles were approximately 33 percent cheaper to use in 2025 compared to equivalent internal combustion engine vehicles.

This economic advantage grew in early 2026 as fuel costs for traditional vehicles rose by 12 to 36 percent, while electricity prices remained largely stable. The decline in EV costs is primarily driven by falling battery prices, which were roughly 35 percent lower in 2025 than five years prior. In Germany, the initial purchase prices for EVs in the three largest segments have already reached parity with comparable gasoline models.

Market trends show significant growth, with electric vehicles accounting for 22 percent of new car sales in Europe during the first half of 2026. Additionally, electric truck sales rose by 40 percent compared to the same period the previous year. The shift toward electrification is estimated to be reducing the European Union's annual fossil fuel import costs by approximately 4.5 billion euros.
