Romania and Moldova energy markets face stability challenges
Romania and Moldova are navigating complex energy transitions and market fluctuations. In Romania, the rapid expansion of renewable energy capacity has outpaced investments in storage and grid modernization. This imbalance, coupled with low water levels affecting hydroelectric and nuclear production, has created vulnerabilities in the energy system, leading to high market prices during peak hours.
Major Romanian energy players reported varied financial results for the first half of 2026. Electrica Group saw a net profit of 457.5 million lei, up 8.6%, while Transelectrica reported a 39% increase in net profit, though much of this was driven by interconnection revenues rather than core transmission activities. Premier Energy Group also reported solid performance, with normalized revenues rising 10% to 877 million euros.
In Moldova, the energy regulator (ANRE) stated that despite regional crises causing temporary high-cost acquisitions, there are currently no premises for increasing electricity tariffs, as costs are calculated on an annual average. Additionally, the Neptun Deep gas field in the Black Sea is expected to provide a new, more affordable gas source for the Moldovan market starting next winter.
