European energy sector financial performance
Overview
Energy companies in Romania and Slovenia have reported significant financial results and investment activities related to electricity production.
In Romania, state-owned companies such as Hidroelectrica and Nuclearelectrica dominated the sector, contributing over 5.73 billion lei to the combined profits of the top ten players during fiscal year 2025. For the first half of 2026, Electrica Group saw an 8.6% increase in net profit compared to the previous year, while Premier Energy Group reported a 27% increase in normalized EBITDA, supported by a 46% rise in renewable energy production. Recent reports indicate that while Electrica Group’s net profit reached 457.5 million lei, Transelectrica saw a 39% increase in net profit, largely driven by interconnection revenues. Premier Energy Group also noted normalized revenues rose 10% to 877 million euros.
However, Romania faces stability challenges as rapid renewable energy expansion has outpaced grid modernization and storage investments. Low water levels have also impacted hydroelectric and nuclear production, contributing to high market prices during peak hours. In Moldova, the regulator ANRE stated that despite regional crises, there are currently no grounds for increasing electricity tariffs. The Neptun Deep gas field is expected to offer a more affordable gas source for Moldova starting next winter.
In Slovenia, the GEN Group reported a net profit of EUR 159.7 million for 2025, down from EUR 185.8 million in 2024. The group attributed this to cost control, electricity generation, and power trading. Nearly 99% of its 3,427 GWh production came from low-carbon and renewable sources. The company more than doubled its investments to EUR 107.5 million, targeting the Krško nuclear power plant and projects such as Krško 2 and the acquisition of Gorenjske Elektrarne.
