Electrica to build high-efficiency cogeneration plant in Craiova
Electrica has signed a contract to develop a high-efficiency cogeneration plant in Craiova, Romania. The project, which could reach an investment value of 235 million euros excluding VAT, aims to replace aging lignite-based generation with natural gas-fired thermal engines. The new facility is designed to be hydrogen-ready and equipped with black-start capability, ensuring energy security and flexibility for the National Energy System.
The plant will provide thermal energy to Craiova's centralized heating system, serving approximately 53,000 homes and public institutions, while also supplying heat and technological processes to Ford Otosan Romania. To optimize efficiency, the plant will include thermal energy storage to decouple heat and electricity production.
In broader energy news, Romania's National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) has approved a voluntary mechanism allowing consumers to receive payments for reducing electricity use during peak demand periods. Additionally, the national energy system has surpassed 2,500 MW of new production and storage capacity in 2026, driven by significant investments in solar, wind, and battery storage technologies.
