Electricity Company of Ghana unions plan nationwide strike

Staff unions of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have scheduled a nationwide demonstration for Tuesday, September 29, 2026. The protest is organized by the Senior Staff Union (SSU) and the Junior Staff Union (JSU), with the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) acting as the convener.

The action is a response to the government's proposed Private Sector Participation (PSP) arrangement, which aims to involve private investors in the management or operations of the utility provider. Workers intend to march in every region where ECG operates from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

During the demonstration, unions plan to present petitions to regional ministers across the country, intended for onward delivery to President John Dramani Mahama. In Accra, workers will assemble at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) forecourt, while those in Kumasi will gather at the ECG Regional Office near the Airport Roundabout.
