Electricity Company of Ghana warns of fake meter and MoMo scams

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a warning regarding fraudulent schemes targeting customers through fake prepaid meter sales and mobile money (MoMo) scams.

According to Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, ECG’s General Manager for External Communications, fraudsters are posing as company agents on platforms like WhatsApp and TikTok to sell meters. In some instances, customers receive unregistered meters that cannot be validated by the company, resulting in illegal connections. In other cases, scammers disappear entirely after receiving upfront payments.

A second scheme involves phone calls where individuals claim to be ECG staff, informing customers that meters are ready for collection and requesting immediate payment to a private mobile money number.

ECG emphasizes that it operates a fully cashless system. All legitimate payments must be processed through the ECG Power App or the shortcode *226#. The company stated that money sent to personal mobile money numbers does not reach ECG accounts and will not be credited to customer accounts.
