Utility service scams in Ghana and Moldova
Overview
Fraudulent schemes targeting utility customers have been reported in Ghana and Moldova.
In Ghana, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) warned of scams involving fake prepaid meter sales and mobile money (MoMo) fraud. Scammers reportedly pose as company agents on social media platforms like WhatsApp and TikTok to sell unregistered meters or request immediate payments to private mobile money numbers. ECG stated that all legitimate payments must be processed through the ECG Power App or the shortcode *226#.
In Moldova, Energocom warned of phone scams where individuals pose as company employees to request natural gas meter readings. These scammers reportedly attempt to obtain sensitive personal and financial information, including identity card details and bank data. Energocom clarified that it does not conduct meter readings via telephone and advised consumers to verify the identity of service personnel.
