Electricity prices in Mid-Norway surge 770 percent in one year
Electricity prices in Mid-Norway (NO3) have increased by 770 percent compared to the third quarter of last year, marking the highest quarterly price for that region since 2010. According to a quarterly report from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE), price increases have been observed across all regions, though the surge in Mid-Norway is the most significant.
Several factors contributed to the price hike, including a new power line between Aurland and Sogndal commissioned in autumn 2025, which increased power exchange between Mid-Norway and West-Norway and aligned Mid-Norway prices more closely with southern Norway. Additionally, a lack of snow during the winter resulted in lower reservoir levels and reduced hydropower production across much of the country.
In Southwest Norway (NO2), reservoir levels reached 52.9 percent by week 42, falling slightly below the previous 20-year low for that period. This region currently lacks over 10 TWh of stored hydropower compared to a normal year. NVE warns that electricity prices are likely to remain high throughout the winter, driven by low reservoir levels, high European gas prices, and reduced wind and solar production on the continent.
