Sweden electricity price volatility and nuclear output risks

Overview

Electricity prices in Sweden and Europe have reached levels not seen since 2022, driven by a combination of high natural gas prices—exacerbated by the war in Ukraine and unrest in the Strait of Hormuz—and low water reservoir levels in the Nordics.

A Sweco analysis, commissioned by Skye, warns of extreme long-term volatility. If industrial consumption increases by 47 TWh without expanded production, electricity prices in northern Sweden could quadruple by 2035. In electricity areas 1 and 2, annual average prices are expected to rise significantly from 2025 levels. To maintain competitiveness, experts advise industrial companies to adopt data-driven tools for more flexible electricity usage.

Adding to these concerns, analysts at Göteborg Energi warn that autumn and winter prices could potentially double for some consumers compared to last year. This pressure is intensified by record-low nuclear power production, which is projected to hit its lowest level since 1983 with an estimated output of only 42 TWh this year. Vattenfall has reported significant maintenance shutdowns at Ringhals 3 and 4, as well as Forsmark 1, due to issues such as debris in cooling systems. These outages, combined with depleted water reservoirs in southern Norway, continue to drive price uncertainty.
