Spain electricity wholesale prices set to hit 2026 annual high
Wholesale electricity prices in Spain are set to reach a 2026 annual high on Monday, October 19, with the average price climbing to 215.11 €/MWh. This represents a 182% increase compared to Sunday's average of 76.28 €/MWh.
According to data from the Iberian Energy Market Operator (OMIE), prices are expected to peak at approximately 299 €/MWh around 21:00, while the lowest rates will occur during the afternoon. The surge is attributed to several factors, including reduced photovoltaic generation due to cloudiness and storms from the Adam weather system, as well as rising international gas prices linked to conflicts in the Middle East.
While these wholesale spikes serve as a reference for regulated tariffs (PVPC), the direct impact on consumers depends on their specific electricity contracts. The current volatility follows a trend where renewable energy output has previously helped stabilize costs, but recent weather patterns have forced a reliance on more expensive fossil fuel sources.
