Electricity prices in Spain show volatility with significant Saturday drop
Electricity prices in the Iberian market are experiencing significant fluctuations. On Friday, October 16, 2026, the average price remained high at 191.64 euros/MWh, according to the Iberian Energy Market Operator (OMIE). Prices peaked at 269.3 euros/MWh during the 08:00 hour, with high costs persisting throughout the early morning and late evening.
In contrast, prices are expected to drop sharply on Saturday, October 17, to an average of 107.17 euros/MWh, representing a 44% decrease from Friday. The most economical period will occur between 12:00 and 16:00, when prices are projected to fall to 1.07 euros/MWh due to high photovoltaic generation. However, the most expensive window is expected in the early morning between 02:00 and 03:00, reaching 179.8 euros/MWh.
Despite the Saturday relief, market trends suggest electricity will continue to trade above 140 euros/MWh in the coming quarter. The Bank of Spain has attributed recent market upturns to broader economic factors.
