Libya coast: Eleven bodies discovered in Mediterranean Sea
Eleven bodies were discovered in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya during an aerial surveillance operation. The remains were spotted by an Albatross aircraft operated by SOS Méditerranée in collaboration with the Humanitarian Pilots Initiative (HPI).
The bodies were located approximately 57 nautical miles from the Libyan city of Zuara. According to reports, the remains were in an advanced state of decomposition. The Italian Coast Guard confirmed it was notified of the discovery and subsequently passed the information to the relevant Libyan authorities.
The location where the bodies were found falls within the search and rescue area of responsibility of the Libyan Coast Guard. The exact circumstances and timing of the shipwreck remain unknown. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that at least 872 people have died or gone missing on this specific migration route so far this year.
