Overview

In August 2026, aircraft operated by SOS Méditerranée and the Humanitarian Pilots Initiative discovered eleven decomposing bodies in the Mediterranean Sea, approximately 57 nautical miles off the coast of Zuara, Libya. Some remains were found with clothing or using tire inner tubes as flotation devices.

The Italian Coast Guard notified Libyan authorities of the discovery, as the location is within Libya’s search and rescue zone. SOS Méditerranée commented that the incident illustrates the “human consequences of deadly EU policies,” which they claim are motivated by “indifference and deterrence at all costs.”

Data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) indicates a significant increase in mortality on the central Mediterranean route. While migrant arrivals on this route fell by 46 percent compared to the previous year, the number of people who have died or gone missing rose sharply, reaching at least 872 people by mid-August 2026.
