Elfriede Jelinek celebrates 80th birthday
Austrian Nobel laureate Elfriede Jelinek turns 80 on October 20. Despite her long-standing avoidance of public appearances and interviews, her literary influence remains pervasive across international stages.
Her work continues to be highly active in the current theater season, with more than a dozen new productions scheduled in Germany, Austria, France, and the Czech Republic. A notable upcoming premiere is ‘Ein Übertritt’ at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus on October 22, a work exploring war, peace, and German identity.
Jelinek, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2004, is known for addressing global and contemporary issues, such as climate change and economic scandals. While she remains reclusive, her presence is maintained through her prolific writing and the frequent staging of her complex, often non-linear texts in 54 different languages.
