Cultural commemorations of Elfriede Jelinek

Overview

In celebration of Nobel Prize-winning author Elfriede Jelinek’s 80th birthday, several cultural initiatives have been announced in Austria.

The City of Vienna has committed 600,000 euros to acquire a partial archive of Jelinek’s work for the Vienna City Library. This collection, described as a “cultural heritage of world class,” includes manuscripts, correspondence, and personal documents ranging from her early journalism through the 2000s. The archive is intended for scientific processing and public access.

To mark the occasion, the documentary essay “Die Sprache von der Leine lassen” (Letting the Language off the Leash), directed by Claudia Müller, is returning to cinemas. The 90-minute film utilizes archival research, rare footage, and text collages featuring readings by actors such as Sandra Hüller and Martin Wuttke. It explores Jelinek’s life, her poetic methodology, and her reflections on personal history and the 2004 Nobel Prize.

As Jelinek reaches her 80th birthday on October 20, her literary influence remains significant despite her long-standing withdrawal from public appearances and interviews. Her work continues to be staged internationally, with more than a dozen new productions expected this season across Germany, Austria, France, and the Czech Republic. Her complex, often non-linear texts are frequently staged in 54 different languages, addressing global issues such as climate change and economic scandals.

Notably, her play ‘Ein Übertritt’ is scheduled to premiere at the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf on October 22, exploring themes of war, peace, and German identity to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
