Elfriede Jelinek documentary returns to cinemas for 80th birthday
To mark the 80th birthday of Nobel Prize-winning Austrian author Elfriede Jelinek, the documentary essay “Die Sprache von der Leine lassen” (Letting the Language off the Leash) is returning to cinemas. Directed by German filmmaker Claudia Müller, the 90-minute portrait explores the life and work of an author who has largely withdrawn from public life for the past two decades.
Through archival research conducted by Müller and editor Mechthild Barth, the film utilizes rare video and film footage to present Jelinek’s reflections on her childhood, her relationship with her dominant mother, and her Jewish father. The narrative structure combines these personal reflections with found-footage material and a text collage featuring readings by various actors, including Sandra Hüller and Martin Wuttke.
The documentary examines Jelinek’s poetic methodology and her views on the lack of true freedom in human action, framed by the significant events surrounding her 2004 Nobel Prize in Literature.
