Warner Bros. reveals first images from The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum

Warner Bros. has released the first official set images from the upcoming film, ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’. To celebrate Hobbit Day, the studio shared photos from the production currently filming in New Zealand, showcasing the Shire and Bag End.

The images feature a glimpse of Frodo Baggins, played by Elijah Wood, seen from behind approaching the iconic round green door of Bag End. While Wood’s face is not visible in the shots, the production is expected to utilize digital de-aging technology to maintain the character's appearance from the original trilogy.

Andy Serkis is set to direct the film and will also reprise his role as Gollum. The story is positioned chronologically between the events of ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’, focusing on the search for Gollum by Gandalf and Aragorn.

The cast includes returning actors Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Lee Pace as Thranduil, alongside new additions such as Jamie Dornan, who takes over the role of Aragorn, Kate Winslet, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Leo Woodall. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on December 17, 2027.
