The Hunt for Gollum film production

Overview

The upcoming film ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ was announced as a new entry in the Middle-earth franchise. Directed by Andy Serkis, who also reprises his role as Gollum, the story is set between the events of ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’. The plot features Aragorn, played by Jamie Dornan, searching for Gollum to prevent the creature from revealing the location of the One Ring to Sauron.

The production includes a mix of returning and new cast members, such as Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, and Lee Pace, alongside newcomers like Kate Winslet, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Leo Woodall. Recent footage and images have confirmed that filming is currently underway. A first look at Ian McKellen as Gandalf shows the actor in full costume, and a first look at Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins has been released. Wood has noted that his role will be “relatively small in scope”.

To coincide with Hobbit Day, Warner Bros. released production photos of filming locations in New Zealand, including the Shire and Bag End. Reports indicate the production is utilizing digital de-aging technology and machine learning to maintain the youthful appearance of returning actors.

New details suggest the film will explore the backstory of Aragorn, specifically his time serving as the Captain of the Rangers of the North, known as Strider. This may provide a deeper look into the Dúnedain, the wandering people of Eriador. The film, produced by Philippa Boyens, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Zane Weiner, is scheduled for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027.
