Elis, Greece: Man arrested after failed elderly fraud attempt

A 31-year-old man was arrested in Amaliada, Greece, following a failed attempt to defraud a 70-year-old woman in the village of Dafni, Elis. The suspects used a telephone scam, posing as accountants and claiming a new law required the victim to replace her cash with bank cards.

The scammers instructed the woman to place her money in a bag outside her home. Instead of complying, the woman alerted the Elis Crime Investigation Department. Police staged a trap using a bag filled with non-monetary items.

Upon arrival, the suspect attempted to take the bag and physically resisted arrest, striking officers. His accomplice, driving the vehicle, attempted to ram the police. The 31-year-old was apprehended, while the driver escaped. Investigations revealed the vehicle's license plates had been recently stolen from Gastouni. The arrested individual faces charges including fraud, theft, physical injury, and violence against public officials.
