Elizabeth Holmes to transfer to Texas halfway house in 2025

Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of the failed blood-testing startup Theranos, is scheduled to be transferred to a halfway house near Austin, Texas, in August 2025. Currently serving her sentence in a federal prison in Bryan, Texas, Holmes is expected to be supervised by the United States Probation Office upon her move to the transition center in Del Valle.

Holmes was convicted in 2022 of fraud for deceiving investors regarding the capabilities of Theranos’s technology, which falsely claimed to detect numerous diseases from minimal blood samples. While her original sentence was over 11 years, her term has been reduced due to retroactive changes in federal sentencing guidelines and the First Step Act.

U.S. District Judge Edward Davila noted that despite the reduction, the sentence remains a just punishment for the hundreds of millions of dollars in losses caused by the fraud. Holmes is currently projected to be released from custody entirely in February 2030.
