Elizabeth Holmes documentary release and legal updates
Overview
The documentary ‘You Can See Everything’, directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, has debuted to critical acclaim, earning a 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and record-breaking ratings on Letterboxd. The 174-minute A24 production, which received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association for strong language and graphic nudity, follows disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes during the 34 days leading up to her 2023 federal prison sentence and continues through her incarceration. The film’s unconventional production involved Fielder moving into the home of Holmes and her partner, Billy Evans, to capture personal moments and direct confrontations.
During production, Fielder negotiated a ‘kill switch’ with A24, which would have allowed the directors to abandon the project if the material was deemed insufficient or the story felt overtold. Following its surprise world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, the film held a sold-out premiere at the New York Film Festival. While the film has become a major cinematic event, some critics and whistleblowers, including former Theranos employee Tyler Shultz, have questioned its journalistic accuracy and the use of dramatized elements.
Regarding her legal status, Holmes is serving her sentence at Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas. While her original sentence of over 11 years for defrauding investors was reduced due to retroactive changes in federal sentencing guidelines and the First Step Act, U.S. District Judge Edward Davila noted the reduction does not diminish the ‘enormity of the crimes’.
Holmes recently issued a statement via social media, describing her incarceration as ‘1,216 endless days and nights’ and vowing to continue her fight to prove her innocence. Department of Justice records indicate she is scheduled to transfer to the Austin Transitional Center in Del Valle on August 23, 2027, with a projected release from custody in February 2030.
