Željana Zovko proposes Croatian electoral unit for Bosnia and Herzegovina

Political tensions have escalated in Bosnia and Herzegovina following statements by European Parliament MEP Željana Zovko regarding electoral reform. Zovko has advocated for a ‘Croatian electoral unit’ to ensure political equality for Croats, suggesting a model similar to Belgium where voters can choose lists based on linguistic affiliation. She argued that such a system would be the ‘most elegant solution’ to allow constituent peoples to fully exercise their electoral will.

Bosnian officials have strongly rejected these proposals. Defense Minister Zukan Helez emphasized that Bosnia and Herzegovina is a sovereign state and that its political and constitutional future must be determined solely by its citizens through domestic institutions, rather than by politicians from neighboring countries. He criticized attempts to influence the country's internal affairs and called for the removal of mechanisms that allow for political blockades.

Federal Minister Nerin Dizdar also criticized the comparison to the Belgian system, calling it ‘caricaturish’ and ‘absurd.’ Dizdar noted that Belgium’s complex federal structure and history of constitutional changes make it an inapplicable model for the current political landscape of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
