Ellinikon Metropolitan Park to become one of Europe’s largest urban green spaces

The Ellinikon Metropolitan Park is being developed as one of Europe’s largest urban green spaces. According to a study titled ‘Contemporary Parks in Greece – A Guide to the Design and Operation of Sustainable Green Spaces’, prepared by 1830 Lab for LAMDA Labs, the park will feature over 30,000 trees and approximately 3 million shrubs, with green coverage exceeding 70% of its total area.

The project emphasizes climate resilience and sustainable water management. Key infrastructure includes a wastewater treatment facility capable of producing 7,000 cubic metres of treated water daily, a 10,000-cubic-metre storage reservoir, and a smart irrigation system designed to save up to 90% of water. The design also incorporates a network of ‘cool routes’ intended to maintain temperatures up to 4°C lower than surrounding asphalt areas.

To support biodiversity, more than 70% of the plantings will consist of native and adapted species, aiming to host over 520 plant and animal species. The planning process utilized thermal mapping and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to optimize shading, air circulation, and thermal comfort.
