Elly Schlein faces reformist pushback over voting preferences in Italy

Inside Italy’s Democratic Party, a clash has emerged over a proposed amendment to re‑introduce preferential voting in the electoral law, dubbed “Bignami‑bis”. Reformist and moderate deputies are urging the party leadership to adopt the change, arguing that it can empower citizens and even improve gender representation.

A bipartisan appeal signed by members such as Deborah Bergamini and Chiara Gribaudo warns that preferences tend to penalise women’s representation, while party secretary Elly Schlein remains vague, indicating opposition to “blocked lists” but avoiding a clear stance on the preference amendment. Reformist figures Raffaella Paita, Maria Elena Boschi and Lia Quartapelle have publicly defended the re‑introduction, emphasizing citizen empowerment and the potential for a double‑gender preference system.

The debate reflects deeper tensions within the centre‑left coalition, with Schlein’s leadership under scrutiny as reformists seek to shape the parliamentary agenda ahead of the next election.
