Elly Schlein urges a broad centre‑left coalition to avoid division ahead of 2027 elections

Democratic Party leader Elly Schlein warned that the centre‑left must adopt a “campo largo” – a wide‑ranging alliance – to prevent the right from winning the 2027 parliamentary elections. She criticised the current “campo stretto” approach, which limits cooperation to a three‑party pact with the Five Star Movement and the Greens‑Left Alliance, and noted the absence of centrist forces such as Italia Viva, Azione and other reformist parties. Schlein also highlighted internal disputes over continued military aid to Ukraine, citing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government and former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s controversial remarks on Russia. The leader said that division within the coalition would repeat the 2022 defeat, and she pledged to find common ground despite vetoes from potential partners like Matteo Renzi and Carlo Calenda.
