Elon Musk funds Texas Senate race with nearly $190 million

Elon Musk has significantly influenced the Texas Senate race by providing massive financial support to Republican interests. According to Federal Election Commission filings, Musk donated $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), a super PAC that supports Republican Senate candidates. The SLF subsequently transferred these funds to Texas PAC, a group dedicated to supporting Republican nominee Ken Paxton.

Musk’s contributions were made in stages, including $75 million on September 9 and $83 million on September 23. He also provided $10 million to the Lone Star Liberty PAC. Total financial involvement by Musk in the contest is estimated at nearly $190 million when including his America PAC.

Democratic candidate James Talarico has criticized these actions, accusing Musk of attempting to ‘buy’ a Senate seat and threatening the democratic system. The influx of cash has allowed Republican-aligned groups to dominate advertising, spending over $159 million on media campaigns, which is roughly double the expenditure of Talarico’s campaign. The race remains highly competitive, with Talarico recently reporting record-breaking fundraising of $64 million in a single quarter.
