Texas 2026 Senate race tilts toward Talarico
Entities: James Talarico · Ken Paxton · Texas · Luke Warford · Texas Public Opinion Research
Overview
A New York Times‑Siena poll (June 19‑27) had the Texas Senate contest between Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton and Democrat State Rep. James Talarico dead‑locked at 47 % each, with each candidate leading different demographic groups. Town‑hall meetings in San Antonio, Houston, DeSoto and Eagle Pass highlighted sharp exchanges over voting‑rights, education funding and border issues, while the race attracted national attention as a bellwether for Senate control.
Late July brought fresh developments. Democratic activists filed a formal complaint alleging Paxton voted from an address where he no longer resides in six consecutive elections, potentially breaching Texas residency rules. The allegation, based on reporting by ProPublica and the Texas Tribune, prompted a request for investigation by the Collin County Democratic Party; Paxton declined to comment.
A Texas Public Opinion Research poll conducted July 15‑17 showed Talarico pulling ahead, 45 % to 40 % for Paxton, the widest margin for the Democrat in the general‑election cycle. The survey found Talarico leading among non‑college voters and independents, while noting strong support for former President Donald Trump among respondents. Fundraising data revealed Talarico has raised roughly $28 million in Q2, dwarfing Paxton’s $1.6 million. The Paxton campaign announced participation in three televised debates scheduled for September and October.
Both campaigns have faced residency‑related scrutiny: Paxton’s alleged out‑of‑area voting and a separate claim that Talarico used his mother’s home to meet residency requirements for a prior race. Despite the Cook Political Report’s "Lean Republican" rating, the latest poll suggests the contest is shifting toward a tighter, potentially Democratic‑leaning contest as election day approaches.
