Starlink and Rassvet: Conflicting reports on Musk's stance and Russian satellite failures
Reports indicate conflicting stances from Elon Musk regarding the use of Starlink for Ukrainian drone strikes within Russian territory. While some sources, citing the Financial Times, suggest Musk is open to the possibility provided the U.S. administration makes the final political decision, other reports from the Kyiv Independent claim Musk remains opposed to such use to avoid military escalation.
Simultaneously, Russia’s efforts to develop a Starlink alternative, known as the Rassvet program, are facing significant technical setbacks. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), none of the 16 satellites launched on July 19 reached their intended operational altitude of approximately 870 kilometers. Most are currently orbiting at much lower altitudes between 300 and 400 kilometers, which increases atmospheric drag and shortens their operational lifespan. At least two satellites are reportedly at risk of re-entering the Earth's atmosphere.
