Elqui River emergency works underway to restore hydraulic capacity

The Ministry of Public Works is conducting emergency operations to restore the hydraulic capacity of the Elqui River in Chile. Following recent floods caused by a frontal system in the Coquimbo Region, the Directorate of Hydraulic Works (DOH) is working in sectors including El Hinojal, Alfalfares, Gabriela Mistral, and Pelicana.

The interventions involve clearing the riverbed, removing accumulated sediment, and reconstructing embankments. These measures aim to mitigate the risk of future overflows and protect nearby communities and infrastructure by restoring the river to its pre-flood conditions.
