Elsinore film chronicles Ian Charleson’s final performance

The biographical drama “Elsinore,” directed by Simon Stone, was presented at the Rome Film Festival. The film stars Andrew Scott as Ian Charleson, a talented Scottish actor facing a terminal AIDS diagnosis in late 1980s London.

The narrative focuses on Charleson’s final professional milestone: stepping in to play Hamlet at the National Theatre in London after Daniel Day-Lewis was forced to leave the production. Despite his declining health, the film portrays Charleson’s resilience and his pursuit of this significant role.

Director Simon Stone noted the challenges in securing funding for a project centered on themes of gay identity and mortality, but highlighted the film's energetic tone. “Elsinore” is scheduled for release in Italian cinemas on January 28, 2027.
