Andrew Scott involvement in Elsinore film

Irish actor Andrew Scott is set to star in the film ‘Elsinore’, a project depicting the final months of actor Ian Charleson as he prepared to play Hamlet at the National Theatre while living with AIDS. The production aims to highlight Charleson’s vitality and features an ensemble cast including Olivia Colman, Billie Piper, and Joe Locke.

Following the announcement of his involvement, the film, directed by Simon Stone, premiered at the Telluride Film Festival. The narrative explores the power of Shakespearean drama through a 1989 setting, centering on a production of ‘Hamlet’ starring Daniel Day-Lewis and utilizing flashbacks to examine Charleson’s life and career.

Since its debut at Telluride, ‘Elsinore’ has received significant critical acclaim, with Scott’s portrayal of Charleson described as a ‘Best Actor contender’. The film explores Charleson’s struggle with his identity and his battle with HIV/AIDS, which led to his death in 1990. The ensemble cast includes Olivia Colman as Charleson’s doctor, Billie Piper as a casting director, and Johnny Flynn as the production's director. Critics have noted the film’s emotional depth regarding the AIDS epidemic and the culture of gay actors during that era. ‘Elsinore’ is scheduled to make its European premiere at the BFI London Film Festival.
