Andrew Scott involvement in Elsinore film
Overview
The biographical drama ‘Elsinore’, directed by Simon Stone and written by Stephen Beresford, continues to gain international momentum following its success at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the International People’s Choice Award.
Following its gala premiere at the 70th London Film Festival at the Royal Festival Hall, the film received a standing ovation. Critics have praised Andrew Scott’s performance, with some suggesting it positions him as a strong contender for Academy Award consideration. The narrative explores Ian Charleson’s personal decline and his interactions with figures such as filmmaker Derek Jarman during a period of significant social prejudice regarding the AIDS crisis.
The film has been selected as the closing film for the 32nd Athens International Film Festival, with its Greek premiere scheduled for October 11, 2026. Following this, the film was presented at the Rome Film Festival. Director Simon Stone noted the challenges in securing funding for a project centered on themes of gay identity and mortality, but highlighted the film’s energetic tone.
The film stars Andrew Scott as Scottish actor Ian Charleson, depicting his final months as he prepared to play Hamlet at the National Theatre in 1989—stepping in after Daniel Day-Lewis left the production—while navigating an HIV/AIDS diagnosis. The ensemble cast includes Olivia Colman as Dr. Margaret Johnson, Billie Piper as a casting director, and Johnny Flynn as the production’s director.
Release schedules include Focus Features in the United States on November 20, StudioCanal in the UK on January 29, 2027, and in Australia on January 28, 2027. An Italian cinema release is also scheduled for January 28, 2027.
