Elvis Guerra targeted in armed attack in Juchitán, Oaxaca
Elvis Guerra, a Zapotec textile designer and poet known for embroidering President Claudia Sheinbaum’s Independence Day attire, was targeted in an armed attack at his home in Juchitán de Zaragoza, Oaxaca. The incident occurred on the night of Friday, September 18, when two individuals on a motorcycle fired shots at his residence.
The Oaxaca State Prosecutor's Office (FGEO) is investigating the attack as an attempted extortion. Authorities have identified a man and a woman on a motorcycle as the probable suspects. The investigation follows reports that Guerra had been facing threats and extortion attempts related to the opening of a new party hall.
In response to the attack, President Sheinbaum and Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara Cruz have communicated with Guerra, offering him inclusion in official protection mechanisms. The President has promised that there will be no impunity for the crime and has committed to a security operation in Juchitán led by the federal Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC). Guerra has called for urgent federal intervention to address the widespread insecurity in the region.
