Armed attack on Elvis Guerra in Oaxaca

Overview

On September 18, 2026, Elvis Guerra, a Zapotec textile designer and poet, was targeted in an armed attack at his home in Juchitán de Zaragoza, Oaxaca. Two individuals on a motorcycle fired shots at his residence. The Oaxaca State Prosecutor's Office is investigating the incident as an attempted extortion, noting that Guerra had previously faced threats regarding a new party hall.

In response, President Claudia Sheinbaum and Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara Cruz offered Guerra official protection. The President committed to a security operation in Juchitán led by the federal Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection.

Following the attack, the Muxe community in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec mobilized to demand justice and increased security. Activists have urged the federal and state governments to move beyond coordination meetings and implement measurable actions against regional criminal violence. Guerra has called for collective efforts to denounce violence and reclaim safety in the region.
