Germany plans new naval port in Emden and NATO hub in Bremerhaven
Germany is significantly expanding its North Sea military infrastructure to bolster NATO capabilities. The Bundeswehr has selected Emden as the site for a new naval port, which is expected to require 40 hectares of land, with an option for an additional 10 hectares. This new facility is planned to accommodate seven frigates, ten minesweepers, and ten tugboats, and is projected to employ a four-digit number of soldiers and civilian staff.
Simultaneously, a major investment is underway in Bremerhaven to transform its port into a NATO deployment hub by 2031. The federal government is committing approximately 1.35 billion euros to this project, with the state of Bremen contributing over 200 million euros. The upgrades include more than 40 measures, such as constructing new heavy-load bridges, expanding port basins, and improving road, rail, and airport logistics to support large-scale military movements.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Lower Saxony Prime Minister Olaf Lies are scheduled to meet in Emden on October 5 to discuss the next steps for the proposed naval base.
