Çeşme mastic resin harvest begins in Turkey

The harvest of geographically indicated mastic resin has commenced in the Çeşme district of İzmir. The process begins in early July with the scoring of the trees, followed by the collection of resin droplets from the ground until mid-September. Once collected, the raw resin undergoes a cleaning process at homes that lasts until December, preparing it for use in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries.

Due to its endemic nature and limited growing regions—specifically Çeşme and Chios—the resin is highly valuable, with prices ranging between 45,000 and 50,000 Turkish Liras per kilogram.

Following a period where tree numbers had dwindled to approximately 1,000, collaborative efforts between local producers and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry have resulted in the planting of approximately 50,000 mastic trees in Çeşme since 2020. Current production occurs across roughly 1,000 decares of land, yielding about 100 kilograms annually. Producers aim to increase this output to between 1.5 and 2 tons once the newly planted trees reach maturity in five years.
