Mastic resin production in Turkey

Overview

Agricultural initiatives in Turkey have led to the commencement of mastic resin harvests in the Muğla and İzmir regions. In Muğla, a project initiated in 2015 has reached its first harvest milestone after an 11-year growth period, with trees currently yielding 80 to 100 grams of resin each. This effort aims to reduce reliance on imports for the food, cosmetic, and medical sectors.

In the Çeşme district of İzmir, the harvest of geographically indicated mastic resin follows a seasonal cycle of tree scoring and resin collection. Following a period where tree populations had declined to approximately 1,000, collaborative efforts with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry have resulted in the planting of roughly 50,000 trees since 2020. While current annual production is approximately 100 kilograms, producers expect output to reach between 1.5 and 2 tons once the new plantings reach maturity in five years.
