Emergency announces popular initiative law for conscientious objection to war
The humanitarian organization Emergency has announced a popular initiative law titled ‘io obietto la guerra’ (I object to war). Announced during the sixth edition of the Emergency Festival in Reggio Emilia, the proposal seeks to establish a legal right to conscientious objection to war for all citizens.
The initiative aims to allow individuals to refuse involvement in war and rearmament through their physical presence, labor, or consent. This includes refusing to participate in the design, production, trade, or movement of weapons intended for current or future conflicts, without facing professional or criminal consequences.
The proposal is part of the ‘R1pud1a’ campaign, which focuses on Article 11 of the Italian Constitution. The campaign has reportedly gathered support from over 650 municipalities, 1,500 schools, and 250,000 people, advocating for the suspension of military collaboration with Israel and opposing the normalization of global conflict.
