Poland issues new air attack response guidelines and shelter instructions
The Polish Ministry of Interior and Administration has released a new 12-page instruction manual detailing how citizens should respond to potential air attacks. This document serves as a supplement to the existing Safety Handbook, which was previously distributed to approximately 17 million households.
Key safety protocols include the 'two-wall rule,' which advises individuals to stay in rooms with at least two solid walls between them and the exterior to provide structural protection. In the event of an alarm, residents are instructed to use stairs rather than elevators and to head to designated shelters. For those unable to reach a shelter, the guidance recommends seeking refuge in basements, tunnels, or windowless central rooms like hallways or bathrooms.
The government has also promoted the 'Gdzie się ukryć' mobile application, which contains a database of over 83,000 temporary shelter locations, including underground garages and metro stations. The app is designed to function even without internet access once data is downloaded.
Authorities have established a three-tier alert system: Level 1 (Vigilance), Level 2 (Readiness), and Level 3 (Alarm/Immediate Action). Deputy Interior Minister Magdalena Roguska emphasized the importance of early preparation, including assembling emergency evacuation backpacks and establishing family communication plans. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has noted that the upcoming autumn and winter months could be particularly critical periods for security monitoring.
