Emilia-Romagna official opposes broad egg freezing subsidies

In the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, political debate is intensifying regarding the funding of egg freezing procedures. Nicola Marcello, Vice President of the Health Policy Commission and a member of Fratelli d'Italia, has expressed opposition to generalized financial contributions for all women requesting the procedure.

Marcello argues that indiscriminate subsidies act as “electoral handouts” rather than sound health policy. He cites clinical data indicating that only 27% of women who pay for gamete freezing use them later, with a birth rate of approximately 41%. He warns that broad funding could waste public resources, create false expectations, and encourage the postponement of motherhood to ages that carry higher medical risks.

Instead, Marcello’s proposal advocates for targeted free egg freezing specifically for women with a documented risk of premature ovarian reserve reduction, identified through hormonal and ultrasound screenings. His plan also calls for standardized prevention and counseling pathways within workplaces and healthcare facilities to create a regional support network.
