Emily Mitchell awarded $17 million in Maine medical malpractice case

A Kennebec County Superior Court jury unanimously awarded Emily Mitchell and her husband Joshua $17 million after a Northern Light Health surgeon at the Inland Hospital in Waterville mistakenly removed Emily's healthy bladder during a laparoscopic procedure intended to excise a benign ovarian cyst in March 2023. The verdict includes roughly $2 million for past and future medical expenses, $6 million for pain and suffering, $8 million for permanent injury, and more than $1 million for the loss of companionship and care to her husband. It is the largest malpractice verdict in the history of Kennebec County. The surgeon is no longer employed by Northern Light Health, which had closed the Waterville hospital earlier in the year.
