Spanish Senate rejects France friendship treaty during Macron state visit

During a two-day state visit by French President Emmanuel Macron to Spain, the Spanish Senate rejected the ratification of a Friendship and Cooperation Treaty between the two nations. The vote, which saw 142 members of the conservative People's Party (PP) and Vox vote against the measure compared to 106 in favor, occurred while Macron was being hosted by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.

The primary point of contention was a clause allowing government ministers from one country to attend the other's cabinet meetings. Although the Spanish Constitutional Court had previously ruled the provision constitutional, the opposition maintained its rejection. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez apologized to President Macron for the Senate's decision, expressing confidence that the treaty would eventually be ratified.

Separately, King Felipe VI used the occasion of the visit to call for greater European solidarity regarding the migrant influx in Ceuta, describing the situation as “unacceptable.” The King also emphasized the need for increased energy and rail interconnections between Spain and France to strengthen bilateral economic ties.
