France-Spain diplomatic relations and state visit

Overview

French President Emmanuel Macron has concluded a two-day state visit to Spain, the first by a French president since 2009. Hosted by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, the visit included military honors, a gala dinner, and discussions with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez regarding European defense, security, and economic cooperation.

The visit aimed to renew the Treaty of Friendship and strengthen bilateral cooperation. While the meeting demonstrated personal rapport between Macron and Sánchez, it yielded few significant new developments. The visit occurred despite legislative tension following the Spanish Senate's rejection of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, where opposition parties blocked the measure over concerns regarding Spanish sovereignty.

Discussions also touched upon broader European challenges, including the humanitarian and political crisis in Ceuta, debates over collective responsibility for European border security, and the impact of economic weakness and protectionist policies from the United States and China. Both nations also face upcoming elections that could impact the stability of the European Union.

Following the conclusion of the Macron visit, the Spanish Royal Family is scheduled to begin a series of diplomatic engagements in October. This includes a state visit to Finland on October 5, where King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia will visit Helsinki and Rovaniemi to discuss European strategic autonomy and security in the Arctic and Baltic regions. The Royal Family will also preside over the Day of the Hispanidad celebrations on October 12.
