Emmanuel Marre explores Vichy politics in film ‘Notre salut’
Emmanuel Marre’s film ‘Notre salut’ explores the intersection of personal intimacy and political compromise during the Vichy regime. Set in September 1940, the narrative follows Henri Marre, a man who arrives in Vichy without resources to seek a position within Marshal Pétain’s new administration.
Driven by a desire to prove his patriotism and professional worth, Henri uses his self-published political treatise, also titled ‘Notre salut’, to advocate for efficiency in rebuilding France. The film, which incorporates real family archives and epistolary exchanges, depicts Henri’s rise to a high-ranking position within the Ministry of Labour through political compromise, while simultaneously documenting the strain on his marriage to his wife, Paulette.
Marre utilizes a blend of historical fact and fictionalized drama, employing anachronistic elements and a documentary-style approach to examine how individuals navigate extreme political landscapes while maintaining personal relationships.
