Release of Emmanuel Marre film ‘Notre salut’

Overview

Emmanuel Marre’s film ‘Notre salut’ examines the Vichy regime during the autumn of 1940, focusing on the intersection of personal intimacy and political compromise. The narrative follows Henri Marre, a man seeking professional worth and social redemption within Marshal Pétain’s administration through political compromise.

Presented at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Best Screenplay award, the film depicts the ‘banality of evil’ through the lens of a small provincial bureaucracy. It utilizes a blend of historical fact, family archives, and fictionalized drama, incorporating anachronistic musical elements to connect the historical period to contemporary perspectives.

Based on the personal history and letters of the director’s great-grandfather, the film features Swann Arlaud as the zealous and opportunistic official navigating the Pétain administration. Critics have noted the film’s clinical approach to the era, emphasizing the administrative and personal compromises that facilitated the regime's actions rather than focusing solely on military conflict. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on September 30, 2026.
