Enaon commits €1 billion to expand Greece's gas network and install smart meters

Greek gas distributor Enaon, a subsidiary of Italgas, announced a €1 billion investment programme running to 2032. The plan aims to extend the natural‑gas grid by more than 2,700 km, add over 366,000 new customers, install one million smart meters by 2030 and connect 59 biomethane production units by 2032. Digital transformation and decarbonisation are central, with in‑house AI technology supporting network operation.

Enaon forecasts a 50 % increase in gas consumption in the distribution network by 2035, driven by residential heating, industrial use and the shift from oil to cleaner fuels. Current domestic consumption is about 6.4 billion cubic metres, up from 6.1 billion in 2024. The RAB is expected to reach roughly €1.4 billion, strengthening the regulator’s revenue base.

Company executives Gianfranco Amoroso (CEO) and Pier Lorenzo Dell’ Orco (President) highlighted that the expansion will also prepare the system for renewable gases such as biomethane and, eventually, hydrogen.
