Greek utility infrastructure upgrades

In July 2026 Greece announced two parallel €1 billion infrastructure programmes aimed at modernising essential utilities. The first, presented by the Ministry of Environment and Energy, targets the Eastern Attica region with 1,500 km of new sewage pipelines, three wastewater treatment plants and 70 intervention sites to serve about 500,000 residents. Funding of €530 million is already secured, with the full network expected to be operational by 2030 and the new Rafina‑Pikermi treatment centre costing €100 million.

A week later, gas distributor Enaon disclosed a €1 billion plan to extend the national gas grid by more than 2,700 km, add 366,000 customers, install one million smart meters by 2030 and connect 59 biomethane units by 2032. The programme also prepares the system for renewable gases such as biomethane and hydrogen, projecting a 50 % rise in gas consumption by 2035.

Both initiatives reflect Greece’s broader push to upgrade utility infrastructure, meet EU environmental standards and support decarbonisation ahead of the 2030‑2035 horizon.
