ENAP faces safety concerns and environmental charges in Chile

A security report commissioned by ENAP has identified potential catastrophe risks at its Maipú gas plant. The study indicates a one-in-80-million probability of a catastrophe resulting from an explosion. High-risk zones extend up to 1,273 meters around gas storage spheres, with a buffer zone reaching 2,228 meters. Experts warn that thermal radiation within these zones could cause second-degree burns, while the buffer zone could suffer structural damage such as broken windows.

Separately, Chile’s Superintendency of the Environment (SMA) has filed serious charges against ENAP Refinerías Aconcagua in Concón. Two of these charges are classified as extremely serious due to the alleged deliberate concealment and alteration of technical data. The SMA claims the company manipulated reports to simulate compliance with sulfur recovery efficiency standards and failed to report significant sulfur dioxide emissions from gas flaring, exceeding legal limits in 2023 and 2024.
