Italy air traffic disruptions caused by technical network failure

A technical failure in the data transmission network supporting air traffic control services in Italy has caused widespread flight disruptions across the country. The Italian air navigation service provider, Enav, reported that the anomalies were detected overnight, leading to a temporary 50 percent reduction in air traffic management capacity to ensure operational safety.

While contingency systems allowed for regular operations until 6:00 AM, the subsequent increase in traffic necessitated flow regulation measures. This has resulted in significant delays and cancellations at major airports, including Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa, Linate, and Bari. The disruptions have also impacted international connections, affecting flights to and from Greece, Serbia, Albania, and Germany.

Enav has explicitly ruled out the possibility of a cyberattack or sabotage, stating that the issue is a technical malfunction within the data transmission network. Although full operational capacity was reported to be restored by the afternoon, travelers are advised to check with their airlines due to the backlog of delayed flights. Some industry leaders have criticized the incident, citing a need for increased investment in modernizing Italy's aviation infrastructure.
