Italian air traffic control network failure

Overview

On October 16, 2026, a technical failure in the data transmission network supporting air traffic control services in Italy caused widespread flight disruptions. The Italian air navigation service provider, Enav, reported that anomalies necessitated a temporary 50 percent reduction in air traffic management capacity to ensure safety.

These disruptions led to significant delays and cancellations at major airports, including Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa, Linate, and Bari, while also affecting international connections to countries such as Greece, Serbia, Albania, and Germany. While Enav initially ruled out cyberattacks or sabotage, subsequent reports identified the failure as occurring within a network managed by Tim.

The situation was further complicated by a 24-hour strike by EasyJet personnel. Although services began returning to normalcy through the use of backup satellite systems, the impact affected thousands of passengers. At Rome-Fiumicino, approximately sixty flights were cancelled. Investigations by the National Cybersecurity Agency have maintained that the incident was due to infrastructure anomalies rather than malicious activity.
